Shore of Legends book

The forest was dark and heavy with fog when the soldier finally slowed his pace. Few would have followed him over the cliffs, where a maze of twisted roots was the only path down, but he wasn’t taking any chances.

Reaching the river, he broke his trail again by drifting at least a hundred yards with the current. After climbing out onto a rocky ledge and descending another series of ravines, he left the clouds behind. Soon his tracks were lost among thousands of crisscrossing branches and leaves, sketched by the ethereal light of a harvest moon.

Now most of the landscape was coated with astral silver. The brightest of this dim light was reflected off scattered ponds and streams, but the most dangerous was usually at eye level. These were intricate webs of sterling threads, nearly invisible. Anyone who failed to notice the traps came face to face with the black spiders stretched across them. He had broken through several of these webs already, and glimpses of a pack of wolves were also keeping him on edge. He knew his luck had to be running out, but there still was no sign of the enemy. Their watchtowers must have been further to the west.

The young man, whose name was Adrian Castello, glanced down at his vest and pants, stained and torn in too many places to count. He still had a long way to go.
